Danny, do you have any thoughts on how durable such an electro-plated copper coating would be ?

Also, do you know if there is any homebrew method of chrome plating ?

Or any other metallic plating ?

Iíve only done copper. Iíve seen examples of gold electroplating. Chrome takes multiple platings of nickel and copper ahead of the final chrome plating and involves some pretty nasty chemicals.

Whatís cool with copper sulfate is it will plate carbon steel without an electrical current. Just dip it it. Stainless steel does require electricity. Google home electroplating and head on down the wormhole. ;-)

Chrome playing should be left to the pros and there is likely a chrome shop somewhere in your area. Chrome plating is a nasty process for both people and the environment and should only be done under the right conditions by the right people. One of the few things Craft wise that I tend to feel strongly about.

Default Pen and Plating

ADDED REVISED VERSION OF PEN:
1. Copper plated screw
2. New clip design
3. Black Enamel Medium Bock #6 Nib

I think I like it better with the copper plated screw and medium Bock enamel nib.

I plate my own items using a fairly heavy duty electroplating machine with copper, gold, etc. I use Caswell materials and heavy plate, The threads are triple 12 mm X 0.8 mm and section 10mm X 1.0mm. There is a small flat area where clip is that prevents spinning of the clip. I haven't had that problem..at least yet.
There probably is a grade of copper...not sure.. but will check for you Mal The copper bar is from Fastenal. The other three pictures are example of copper in toto including the new copper Bock nib . Regards, Doc

Thanks, Doc, for those very interesting and helpful remarks and the additional pics.

Do you have any 'take' on the durability of the electroplated gold ?

Is the solute expensive ? What is its chemical name, and where do you get it ?

Is the solvent highly acidic or basic ?

I would love to try some gold electroplating ... is it safe for home use outdoors ?

Iíve seen a vendor at a gun show that did gold electroplating with a cobalt additive that made for a hard gold plating for guns.

Thank you for that, Dan .... if you find any details about that process I would be very interested in getting some links, please.
