THis was my first try at a mod slimline.(kinda a Russ pen?) The tip is a piec of figured asian rosewood that was leftover from anoyher pen. It didnt have the center ring before. I tried dipping it in poly after the first finish but after it dried I found a bulge of poly at the end. THought I would be smart and just turn the bulge down and re-poly. As soon as my tool touched the end the blank blew out a piece the lenght of the blank and down to the brass. So i made another back end piece (measure twice, cut once) which I missed the measure on.(See before mentioned advice i did not follow.)When i put them together the brass hit before the centers touched. Decided to put a small piece of paduak on the nib section, turned it down to match ,and ca/poly brushed on and i saved the pen. Still need to work on the joint on the next one but the wife decided she wants it so no loss. And the rest of the pen is cedar a friend gave me.
