So I had started the puzzle inlay a couple weeks ago and have been completing it in stages whenever I have had the time. Last weekend I was going to turn it and noticed that I hadn't gotten enough epoxy on several pieces so I added more and was going to trim down the blanks this weekend. Well I got to the shop just tossed them on the lathe and turned them down with the trimming totally forgotten. Everything went well right up until I pressed the pen together. The main body of the pen turned out great but the cap fragmented enough to break a couple of the pieces. I was needless to say very angry with me. My aunt was wanting one of these pens because her son is autistic. I explained what was going on with it and she would have to wait longer for her pen. She insisted however of having THIS pen. She has muscular dystrophy and wanted this pen because it is different like her.

God willing I'll never make another like it. I have a terrible memory and usually have to do something as soon as I think about it or it's gone forever. Luck of the draw I guess. Normally my amazing wife reminds me of important stuff but I forgot to let her know about the trimming

Jeff, what a wonderful story. But personally I believe your title to be somewhat of a misnomer.

Having somewhat of an art background, I can tell you all about the so called "rules" of what is considered beautiful to the human eye. But the eye just can't hold a candle to the human heart and mind.

I agree with the other members here. For in all the ways that truly matter... Your pen IS a masterpiece!!

That's still a nice pen with great intentions. Good for you for doing something so thoughtful. We all want to make perfect pens, but many times the gift pens mean a lot to the person receiving the pen because we took the time to make them something memorable.

I make lots of DIFFERENT pens.
