Marksman in damascus and some other red stuff

I'm sure that at one point or another all of us have had the question posed
"can you make me a pen with........?"and I've had request from a dog bone to
a piece of an old casket (both of which I referred to a pen maker the next town over) so when this customer brought me a piece of red "some kind " of wood
I thought finally something cool to work with.I think that it's a maple burl.
I'm not very good at identifying woods but it is cool looking with the damascus body I thought.

It kind of looks like dyed box elder burl. Where did you get the damascus?

On the third picture to the right, do you know what kind of pod thing that the pen is sitting on?

The pod is a Banksia Nut they're kind of ugly but make nice looking pens,
the damascus came from Alabama Damascus,but I had to have it turned locally,
the stuff is pretty hard and my friends mini metal lathe just got laughed at by it!
