Here is a picture of some of the pens I'm getting from our school gym floor. The gym was destroyed by a tornado back in March. The red pens were dyed with aniline dye.

Thanks all. I dyed the wood with aniline dye purchased at woodcraft, but most woodworking stores has it. I dyed it on the lathe after sanding. resanded with the final 3 grits and applied the finish. The dye comes in various colors.

The two pens on the ends are BE maple and the red ones are fiddleback maple. I have some BE maple dyed red and it does very nicely.
Thanks. Give it a try.
