And here another new pen, a "Shibui" Type, standard size pen with a "TameTame-Raden-Nuri" mother of pearl inlaid in red urushi lacquer, after polishing coated with around 30 layers of transparent urushi. Nice cherry color

Have a nice weekend

Martin

Just curious, what do the various names mean and how do you choose them - many propria, tametame, et cetera?

If you apply the finish by brush, are there any general suggestions and tips you can offer for brushing and leveling finish on pen bodies?

Thank you very much.
Actually I do not chose names, in Japanese art & craft ethey have terms for almost everything.

Raden for example: Ra = mother of pearl, Den = sprinkling
Tame refers to one final layer of transparent urushi lacquer
TameTame means "many" trasparent layers of lacquer

Urushi is traditionally applied by the use of a brush that is made of lacquer itself, and the bristles are human hair. (not a joke...)

The brush is typically fairly long, flat, and varies in widths ... the smaller brushes cost upwards of 10,000 yen (a school packed lunch box is perhaps around 400 - 600 yen). The larger brushes that are very well made can cost upwards of 30,000 yen.

The art of lacquer in and of itself is an amazing world ... :)
