I don't remember if Martin mentioned this or if I read it somewhere else but urushi lacquer is fairly heat resistant. I found this rather quickly by searching for "urushi lacquer's heat resistance", which gave the link below. That is basically what I read from Martin or somewhere else.

About Urushi(japan lacquer)
"Urushi is very resistant to acid, alkali and alcohol. Furthermore, it withstands almost 300 degrees centigrade(600 degrees Fahrenheit) heat. Its only defect is its vulnerability to ultraviolet rays like other natural finishes."
