This is my second Long Boy kit, this time in chrome. The blank is a Rhino called Blue Orca. While I like this blank more than the first Long Boy I made, I'm still a little disappointed. I like the shade of blue, but was expecting more and/or dramatic figure.

I've turned several Rhino blanks, and really like them. They do take longer to turn, because they seem to be a little harder. I know I have to sharpen my chisel usually a couple of times during turning them. But another reason is their size. They're advertised as being 7/8" x 7/8", which is nice in the case of bigger pens (like the ones that use 12.5mm tubes). The Blue Orca blank measured at 7/8" x 1", so I decided to trim it to 3/4" square. It was easy on my bandsaw with the fence. It definitely made a difference in turning time.
