I had a few hours in the shop yesterday for the first time in roughly a week.
I think I got lucky on the wood I picked up to turn:
The first pen was a black slimline kit with longleaf pine full of pitch; we call
it fatlighter 'cause it ignites a fire so easily. No sanding, it went straight from
the skew to finishing with CA and a carnuba topcoat.
Second was an upgraded gold slimline kit on Nicaraguan black walnut from an offcut
given me by a gunstock maker. This may be the darkest walnut I've seen -- nearly jet
black and it turned wonderfully. I filled the pores with super-blonde shellac followed
with CA and topcoated with a carnuba wax buffing.
Both woods smelled great while working 'em.
