The one with the red tone looks like it was still in felt, I like the more colorful antler pens. Two fine examples of antler pens.

I wasn't sure how the color works. these are only my 2nd and 3rd antler pens. it was a small antler. so i guess that makes sense. thanks for clearing that up. i'll be sure to have my friend keep an eye for small antler.

Just about any antler that is a fresh road kill or shed will have those pink colors throughout! After you turn it close to size, saturate it well with thin CA, and again after getting the dimensions to your preference, and that will help to maintain that color forever. It will darken to some extent, but not much and it will have more of the dried blood color tone to it. (not to sound morbid) If you are able to find a roadkill around shed time of the year, (with approval from the game warden so you dont get a huge fine) cut the antlers off just below the shed line and then turn it into a pen! The shed line will show up like a pinkish red line all the way around, its really neat, but hard to get! Just my .02 worth, thanks for reading.

Moose and caribou shows the most color variation around the base of tines, rather like wood grain in fact. The longer it has been expossed to the eliments the more it bleaches. I turned a set of majestic Jr's for my parents. The antler for Mom's pen had been sitting next to a river for many years and was snow white. Dad's was from dinner and it is full of bluegray swirls and rust colored flecks.
