I'm still struggling with how to shape the blank with this kit. I liked the look of patmurris's one so I decided to copy it with the cottonwood blank I had ready....

I don't really know what happened, some combination of not paying attention at the right moment and not realizing how soft cottonwood was (the sandpaper took off a lot of wood). Anyway here's the result, it's my best finish so far (although the photo isn't good enough to show it really)

The secret to sanding a straight blank is to have a wide board supporting wide sand paper.
An use a caliper, either dial or digital.
