Haven't posted for a while - been busy turning lots of different stuff but had a itch to try dying a bowl I've been playing with but before I did the bowl I thought I'd just play with a pen. While cutting bowl blanks from some spalted maple I found at a construction site I saved the slabs to make pen blanks.

Also wanted to try dying wood with cake frosting gel - this happens to be Christmas Red from my local cake supply store. Blank was stabilized with wood hardener from HD - turned to shape and sanded to 400 grit. Dissolved frosting gel 1 part gel to 3 parts water. Dyed the pen barrel on the lathe - 2 coats - dried for one hour - then sanded through MM to 4000. Reapplied dye allowed to dry one more hour then MM through 12000 - 2 coats of thin CA as a sealer - 400 grit to smooth - MM through 12000 - standard CA process on top - polished with White Diamond and wax.
