Recent article in Woodtruning Design Magazine was about dying rice and casting it. Heck, figured I'd give it a try. This is the last pen I made for our Memorial Day event. It begins tomorrow.

Overall it came out okay. I would have liked the rice to be a little darker in color. It's a little more pastel looking than I had in mind. More food coloring next time. Still, I am happy with it.

You can't see it in the photo but I added some silver sparkle to the resin and it gives it a very subtle twinkle.

Finish is CA. There were a few air bubbles and I felt like the rice needed to be sealed. 5 coats of CA sanded to 600 and then buffed.

Thanks for looking. Comments welcome.

yep..that turned out great! I did some rice a while back and absolutely agree with sealing it, because I doubt resin would penetrate a rice seed but moisture sure would swell it up, maybe even make it moldy.
