Eugene (ElMostro) appropriately named these blanks "Cancun". They remind me of the island.

Spalted Maple Burl Cancun wrapped around a Chrome Navigator. Four views of the same pen.

Thanks for looking.

Very cool. How did you finish these? I have some coming in the mail and I was wondering how I am going to finish them.

First, I recommend you turn these with a scary sharp skew.

Here is what I did with this one:

1. Dry sanded to 2000 (started at 600).
2. Wiped down blanks with slightly damp cloth, spin to air dry.
3. Applied two coats of medium CA (I was out of thin, or I would have used three or four coats of thin).
4. Wet sanded to 12000 MicroMesh.
5. Two coats of McQuires Plastix Polish. (Let each coat dry before buffing off with a cotton cloth.)

Be careful to avoid heat, from drilling to finishing. The wood and resin will react differently.

Have fun.

Tim,

Thanks for taking the time to explain your finish. What speed did you drill at? Normally I drill acrylics at 600 and wood at 1500. I will post my results when I am done with my attempt. Hopefully it turns out as nice as yours.

Thanks,
Jason

Tim,

Thanks again. I was a little nervous about drilling/turning these. I was especially curious about a CA finish on the acrylic portion.

I was too.

I remember seeing a post about finishing these a few months ago. I do not remember who it was, or I would give them credit. The thing I remembered was:

"Drill like acrylic. Finish like wood."

Good luck. Looking forward to seeing your creation.
