I had made a Huon Burl pen for my mates wife who was born in Tasmania where the Huon grows these two are for her sister and brother. I will take these to Church for her this afternoon.
Both are from the same cut piece. The inclusions in the second one created a face, you never know what will be revealed as you turn, half of the excitement for me.
I was able to turn these last Thursday here at the Royal Canberra Show that runs annually here much as an Agricultural Show. My ACT Woodcraft Guild had been given a stand for demos etc.
This ancient at least two to three thousand year old timber is unique to Tasmania the only place it grows in the world, it grows but mm,s a year in rain forest country and is highly protected.
