I had a small portion of a special blank of Huanghuali left from a Cambridge I made. The third photo really shows it's true color with the yellowing of the wood.
Now I'm out and wish I could get my hands on more but that would be quite costly. Enjoy!

Gorgeous job; stunning pen.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is Huanghuali, and where is it from?

Nice work Buzz. Huanghuali is a wood I've wanted to try for several years, I'm glad to see Gary Peck back posting, he had some very nice woods, no Huanghuali, but he did have some of the Huali which is the same wood, just not from the Huang Dynasty. it has to be pretty scarey whacking away on a piece of wood with history and venerability as that.

great pen. elegant.

the color of Hainan Huanghuali basically have two group.
The wood from west Hainan is more close to red. We call it yo-li.
If you like yellow and more figured, try the one from north Hainan.
which we call kang-li.

Dave, I was having the same problem, but I just decided to go for it. What helped me decide is that I knew I wanted gold with it.
