... an all-steel Pentel Sharp pencil barrel? Drilling 4 inches deep into a piece of 9 mm steel rod without the right bit ain't no fun, but it worked.
This was mostly an attempt to turn a curved profile at each end of the barrel without a radius cutter on a metalworking lathe. I used a DOS-based utility called PROFILE by Marv Klotz ( http://www.myvirtualnetwork.com/mklotz/ ) to generate a series of straight cuts, reducing the diameter to approximate the curve I wanted (14 and 15.5 inch radii), then smoothed the steps with a file, a diamond file, and some ScotchBrite.
It's just a bit heavier than the original. <G>
