So I had this piece of wood in a box of scrap. It was not labeled and I have no idea what it is or where it came from.

Anyone have any thoughts on what it might be?

Looks like elm or chinese elm to me. I get that effect by turning 1" branches of chinese elm. I pick a branch with lots of little twigs which make the little "eyes."

No special scent that I recall...it's actually been a few weeks since I turned it and I'm just getting around to taking some pictures.

Elm is a possibility. I leaning away from maple though.

Well now we're definitely all over the place. I think I'll just call it pretty burl wood and be happy :)

Thanks all!

I'm surprised that nobody took a guess at thuya burl, but then you
did say you didn't notice an aroma. Thuya smells sort of pepper-y to
me.. definitely spicy smell from the oils and resins.
Anyway, that's my guess

Carl, I think it is a piece of olive wood from Athens Greece.
I believe you got it at a blank drawing at one of our club meetings. I have several more similar to it

my guess is Russian olive burl

I made this pen from Russian olive burl a while ago but it has similar grain. just my guess. BTW, my photo skills have improved since then.

That's entirely possible. It was mixed in with all the rest of my "other" blanks that I don't know what they are.

Definitely looks similar.

I'm pretty much giving up on any positive ID as it seems there are so many things it could be.

Foundburl wood
