My woodturning club Capital Area Woodturners (CAW), in co-operation with the Northern Virginia Woodcarvers are marking Eagle Head Canes for our OIF wounded veterians. I required some cane blanks and made a stop at my favorite wood/watering hole for some curly maple.. Well Don, I call him Don as that’s his name, says to me, check out the spalting in this cut off from this maple board. The mixture of figure, color and spalted pattern was fantastic. After turning this pen I called Don who subsequently set aside this stack of cut offs for me. Isn’t Don a GREAT guy!!

So the wounded vets will have nice curly maple canes I’ll have nice pen blanks..

If anyone is interested in participating the Eagle Cane Project, which is really a national level event you can check out http://www.eowca.com/cane.html

There is a local chapter, here in the Detroit area, doing the same thing. There was an article in the Detroit Free Press last Sunday on it. What a wonderful gesture and beautiful results.
On the wood find, what a stroke of luck! Great looking pens.
