I had never worked with this material before -- it's not hard, but it is fragile. The piece is almost a century old, but has very rich color and nice depth. The trim is nickel silver.

That's pretty. I've seen it on ebay but the pics made it look boring. Guess I was wrong. What diameter was the rod?

What is the history of that blank? Was it just in its raw form, waiting to be turned into jewelry, or did you "harvest" it from something else?

That is fantastic. What is this material?

This is also know as casein, which some on IAP have used before in the white form. This material was invented back in the 1880-1890's and was first used for making buttons and then later for poker chips among other things.
I've used a lot of this material in the past months and love the pens I've made with it.
By the way Doug your pen looks great.
