It's a great first photo with good focus and not a lot of glare, so you did good!

To improve it you'd want to find the white balance setting on your camera and try to match it up with the lighting you're using so you get better color rendition. Next, thing to look at would be experimenting with photo angle, backrounds, posing and such. Most importantly, enjoy the process and have fun. You can learn as much about taking good still photos in here as you can pen making, it just depends on how far you want to go with it.

And before I ramble on and forget, then pen looks great!

Don't apologize, you did good for a first photo.

And since phones often don't take as good of photos as the megapixel ratings make you think, I'm a little more impressed you got as good as what you did!
