One member of my woodworking club has been considering yet rejecting the slippery slope of pen-making.
Tonight, he visited the shop to have me show him how I make a pen.
We spent an enjoyable couple of hours together doing everything from picking out the wood to discussing the design to building and finishing the pen. I did all the work this time, but he'll most likely be back Saturday to make a pen while I watch and offer advice.
The resulting pen:
Chrome slimline dressed in segmented, Curly, lightly bird's eyed maple with black walnut accents. I can't be happier. Usually, I struggle with my CA finish.
The fit and finish (skewed smooth, CA, walnut oil & more CA, then MM 1500 thru 12000, and buffed out with plastic polish) came out dead on.
Plus, after all these months saying he doesn't need a lathe, he's asking what I think of certain brands and what else he'd need to get started.
I think the hook is set for good this time.
