Hello from Northwest Indiana. I just got into turning and finished my first pen. I thought it turned out pretty well. Always open to comments and suggestions.

Thanks,
Brian

Looks great! The fit and finish look to be spot on. Is that a Harbor Freight gouge in the pic? If it is, I bought the same set to learn with and am still using them. Looking forward to seeing what else you can do if this was just the first!

Not sure where the gouge came from. I actually bought the lathe and tools from Craigslist. I just purchased a carbide finishing tool which I used on this pen. I really like the carbide tool.

Thanks for all the compliments!

Also, I need to confess that the top section was a blank given to me. I did not actually laminate it, but I do plan on doing that in the future.

I used several coats of Mylands friction. I have used CA on some other small non-pen projects and the smell bugs me and it burns my eyes. I'm gonna see how the Mylands holds up.

Nice Pen, Brian.
Excellent Fit and Finish.
A Great First. Please resist the temptation to give it away or sell it.
Keep it for yourself, and use it to gauge your progress in Pen Making.
Congratulations,
Brian.

I will also say that for a first pen you did one super job.
I bet you are proud of that pen.
Keep a sharp eye on it as all your friends and family will want it.

I an looking forward to what your second pen will be.
Also what you will come up with a year from now.

Before you do your final sanding give the wood a good coat of thin super glue.
That will harden the wood a bit and allow you to put a real nice gloss on it.
If the CA bothers you then keep a fan running to blow away the fumes.
The CA fumes bothers me a LOT!

For a first pen that is excellent! As a others have said, keep this one to judge your progress going forward. Welcome to the IAP, fantastic, helpful "family" to be associated with!

Excellent job on your first pen. My first wasn't nearly that nice.

The CA bothers a lot of people, including myself. As long as I have the dust collector running it pulls the fumes away and problem solved. In most cases that is all it takes ( or a fan).
