Obviously, I'm new to this. I bought the stabilized (also a first, come to think of it) Maple Burl from Bill at Arizona Silhouette. It turned easily. Applied my standard, non-stabilized wood finish of CA/BLO in case there were some rogue wood fibers that avoided the stabilization process, and voila!
Looking at it now, I think I should have turned a little bit of a curve to the cap blank, instead of a dead-straight line between the bushings. Something to apply to my next pen.
