After all the discussion I tested a theory to see if I had it right. Just some odd and end pieces of scraps as I was not going to use any good blanks if it did not work out. The herringbone is maple and the top is zircote with a maple stripe. All of the cuts were done free hand so the joints don't match up as tight as I would like, I fixed that on the next one.

There ya go, it looks pretty good. The sloppy joinery kinda adds to it, making it more like a wooden rope. I like it.

I almost didn't post this pen because of the joints. I cut all the pieces without measuring and no jigs, so I figured it wasn't too bad considering. Seeing as it is my first one, I had to go ahead and make it into a pen.
