Engraved from a photo

Yeah, believe it or not, I make a pen once in a while.

Engraved this one the same way as the mechanical scrimshaw. started
out way back as a color photo with a lot of steps in between, but it came
out pretty decent. The pen kit is all beat up though. Just wanted to show
the blank.

What exactly is a mechanical scrimshaw?

Mechanical scrimshaw means I didn't sit down with a sharpened needle
and a whale bone and use my artistic talents to make a stick man. I
used a blank made of acrylic resin and alumina trihydrate. I've done these
blanks before but results were inconsistent in wood. With the resin I can
get a consistent engraving once I put the image through some software
conversions. It does have texture before finishing.. it's a rough surface.
That's what the ink sticks to. I'm still doing them with 3D levels so that
you can get more ink into the darker areas, giving more of an impression
of 'depth'.

also playing with some abrasives that look interesting. Diamond belts in
1, 0.5 and 0.25 micron (14,000, 50,000 and 100,000 mesh) to see if
they're something penmakers could use. The belts are pretty stiff, used
for lapidary work polishing gemstones.. but the manufacturer says it
shouldn't be too difficult to do something in a softer backing for us.
We'll see.. great for polishing stone, though!

Using Corian is an excellent idea. No grains to work with and the stuff with stands temperatures of 366 degrees, is similar to granite. Wonderful ideal and work.

So, is this a left handed pen? :wink: Looks to me like a right hander would be looking at the back of her head while writing. Do you have a picture of the other side? I'm curious to see how you blended where the wrapped design meets. The side you showed looks great.

I'm glad you told us what it was, if you hadn't I would have figured it was a cast decal of a picture. That is amazing!

I dont want my stones pollished but for penmaking keep us up dated

Yep.. I can do that. Still working out whether I should do the color fill
and cast them in clear, or let the customer do that.

I suppose it depends on if you're using it at your desk or in outer space.
The photo happened to be that way.. I suppose I could change it, but
people tend not to like their photos reversed!
As for blending it, there's really no blending in a photo unless you fade
out all the edges or it happens to be a photo of some pattern that was
photographed exactly right. So I put a border under the clip and put
a name in there. So if someone wanted to make a custom pen, their
name could be a permanent part of the pen.

there IS!! I saw it!!

I had to make that one grascale so nobody would see that my own
personal carry pen is the bottom half of a chrome Sierra Vista and
the top part of a gold Wall St II.. both pretty beat up. Another month or
so the gold will be gone and the top/bottom will match

You are funny. If I use the word Corian while trying to sell the pen, it is dropped like a hot potato, especially if the holder is a woman. They don't want anything to do with the kitchen these days. I have gone to describing the pen by its chemical make-up as well. Works better.
