The pen was a retirement gift for a friend who was a history teacher.
The blank is 4 000 year old bog oak.

That is beautiful! Great gesture on your part. May I ask you how you got that gorgeous finish? I have never had luck finishing bog oak:confused:

This was the first time that I turned a bog oak blank and I now know what you mean. I had to be very gentle because the grain tears out so easily and leaves you with these deep grooves and blemishes. I sanded from 220 grit to 800 grit. Then I used two coats of thin CA followed by 6 coats of medium CA. I then sanded again with 400, 600, and 800 grit. I polished it with plastic polish and then buffed it on the buffer using Tripoli and White Diamond compounds.
