I'd have to say I like the oak best myself. My dad harvested two big oak burls from his property. There was a church on his property probably more than 50 years ago. All that remained while I was still in school was the concrete steps. The two oaks that grew the burls had a 2X8 nailed between them. The board was the hitching post the horses. Dad cut off the burls and left them in his shop until he found out I could use them and gave them to me. Lo and behold they had spalted while they were in his shop. Not a lot of spalting, but enough to make them interesting. There is a wide variety of wood in the one piece that I have cut up. I cut about 6 inches off of the bottom of one and made pen blanks. Got at least 4 times as much left over. I'd like to make dad a bowl or something out of some of it. Anyway, the oak is kinda special.
