Ebony and Abalone

Nice looking pen.
The Abalone section looks like guitar inlay strips. Is this what you used?
I ordered a Stewart-MacDonald catalog for pickard material and inlay strips just like this.
Now i know what it looks like i may try it.

I had a bunch of abalone strips from the days when I used to make musical instruments. You can get them from companies that supply parts for making guitars. I just glued the strips to a brass 7mm tube with CA, then filled in the spaces with black epoxy. Then I just used sandpaper to get it round and to size. I was afraid to put a lathe chisel to it since it took me several hours just to glue it up. I was thinking of making both parts of the pen like the top, but thought it might be too busy. Aso may try to cast clear resin on another similar effort if I want to make a fatter pen but that's in the future.

I would probably have more Abalone glued to my fingers then on the pen.

Very unique - For me, the abalone's a little overwhelming, but i'm weird that way. It's very nice looking! I wonder if abalone would make a good CB? Maybe as accent pieces?

Looks good! Suggestion: Do it on a large fountain pen. The straight lines of an El Grande or Churchill would lend themselves to this. Or an Emperor. I have a feeling if you want to sell these, you'll be able to get a much better price for one of those than for a slim ballpoint pen.

Just a word of caution!!! The dust given off from any shell is hazardous. Fine dust is inhaled. You could always spot a shell grinder in the jewelry business by their cough.
