I had the good fortune of gaining access to a laser cutter this semester, so I decided to have a go at custom engraving.
A little experimentation revealed that etching in acrylic alone doesn't show up very well, so I filled the etching with a gold acrylic paint. I did the etching and paint fill after turning and sanding through 600, leaving the micromesh progression to remove any stray paint on the surface of the blank without risking 'sanding through the etch.'
Fortunately, the laser can maintain focus for engraving normal sized text on a blank - anything larger would probably require rotation of the blank during engraving.
Comments and criticism appreciated!
