This is a cigar with deer antler top, mesquite burl with black and brown sand inlays, kinda of an Animal, Vegetable, Mineral theme:

No, they are flush. I drilled holes through the side of the blank, then glued in the tube. A drop of CA then a tiny bit of sand in each hole. I filled the rest of the holes with thick CA (slowly, one drop at a time) then turned it. For the most part, I was able to arrange the sand so that it stayed below the finish level, but there are a couple grains on the other side that stuck out. Turning and sanding the blank leveled those few grains.
