I don't usually try new items that look like they will require a lot of time but this site has inspired me to branch out. The first in a knot, cut at 30 degrees. The wood is mahogany and the insert is plastic that was lying around the shop, from an old Levelor blind. It matched the thickness of the band saw so it gave up its place as a shim. I did this one freehand and can see the value of making up a jig as suggested in some of the other posts. The second is a corncob, one of a box bought on Ebay, un-stabilized, just a plain corncob. I thought that the finish would be much more difficult and lumpy but the corn smooths out nice with the help of a little CA. My first of any new material usually ends up in the scrap pile as the lessons learned prototype, so I'm pleased and a little surprised, that both made it all the way to a finished pen.
