OK I gave it a go and I must be crazy for trying it in 2 of the more difficult to turn woods I have. It started off all spalted birch......the lower end came apart so I striped it all down and went with a really old burl I had. Got the lower end finished, started the cap and it split and came apart. Switched the cap back to splated, no more burl and the lower end was done. I added a stripe of Mammoth bone and a stripe of walrus ivory to try and tie the two together. The burl didn't take the CA finish very well and it's got lots of problems but the closed end worked great! Especially when you consider I still lack a chuck and all of this was done on a standard mandrel.

I like your choice of words. I had a chuckle about the igloo. I delight in watching doco's on Alsaka and someone would really have to be at the bottom of the woodpile not to know igloo building went out of fashion with global warming.
