While on vacation in Hawaii for a wedding I visited a Koa woodworking store, and they had a box of scrap on the floor for sale. The pieces were pretty good, so I picked it up. I am glad I did.
This is my first closed end pen. The first barrel I turned too shallow and cut into the drilled hole. Fortunately I still had the left over piece from where i had cut it off, so I took a chance and cut a new barrel. It's not a perfect match to the cap wood, but it's close enough. I'm glad I could save it. I used the Mandrel from AZ, and it's a thing of joy to work with. It's worth the price, next step is a double closed end pen.
Here is my Koa closed end pen. I couldn't catch the shimmering curl this pen has unfortunately.
The finish is as follows:
Walnut Oil
Thin CA / Walnut Oil x2
Medium CA / Walnut Oil x2
I'm not sure about the first coating of walnut oil though, it seems to have darkened it a little too much.
