I have absolutely terrible luck with these. I'd say i'm almost 50% success/fail. This I didn't notice until a couple days after I made the pen. Is this a result of trimming or when I press the pen? This is very aggravating.

It's very likely occurring when you are pressing the components in. I used to have the same problem with my CA finish lifting a little during assembly. I now use the appropriate bushing to support the brass tube more directly when pressing in the first component on the tube. Bear in mind, I use TBC bushings, so if you turn using a mandrel, your bushings will not work.

I use the little dremel sanding drums in my drill press to clean the inside of the tubes out. I run the sanding drum in the tube to point that I can almost hand press the components in the tube.
