Sometimes you just find a new wood (to you) that makes going to the lathe extra fun and rewarding. Canarywood was such a wood for me with rich, varied colors that popped when cut in a crosscut. The cut with the grain is pleasant, but far more subtle. I used Doctor's Woorkshop Walnut oil system to get a natural shine.

I learned a less expensive way to buy 10-20 blank's worth of rare hardwood. This is probably not a new technique to get inexpensive wood to some of you, but I asked to buy 8" of hardwood at my local fine wood lumberyard called Austin Hardwoods and Hardware. They agreed and the price was amazingly cheap. I brought them a 10' piece and pointed to one end and they cut 8" and charged a couple of dollars. Imagine pushing a cart through the store with 8-12' pieces of canarywood, purpleheart, padauk, zebrawood and bocote- very colorful. It caused a few stares. I left with five 8" pieces.
