Cool Ken! Congrats on working all the issues with this. They look great! What about using spalted wood; isn't it usually lighter than even the standard woods we use?

Nice work Ken. Another thing you could try is a closed body pen. Just find a dowell that would fit in the hole and turn it between centers. Or take a dowell that is a little larger and turn or sand it down. That way you wouldn't have to use the black ends. That is assuming you have a drill chuck. I also agree with Jim that some of the spalted woods that are around may be lighter.
