Gerry, I did not use macro setting on any of the photos, not sure why they came out blurry. same focus point and same distance, and well withing the focal range of the camera. Io me it looks like the focal point is between the pen and the back drop.

aye on a tripod, with timed shutter release, only thing I can think of is the camera focused on something in the background, and not all the way back either.
