Smells like having your teeth drilled! whoever suggested soaking it for 24 hours first was a smart guy!

It's also prone to cracking. Good choice of pen style, lots of "meat" left on the pen. Hope it holds up for you.

I didn't have any problems with it swelling or sticking to the sandpaper.

I finished it by using sandpaper down to 600 grit and then starting with the plastic finishing sandpaper from yellow all the way down to gray, then four applications of one step plastic polish; all at 1200rpms.

Bit of a bugger to get a good finish but worth the effort.

Nice pen.
I did a buffalo Jr. Statesman for my son who is a Scout Professional. It did crack in a couple of places after a few months. I refinished, filling the cracks with CA and recoating with about 6 coats CA. The cracks are hardly noticeable and it seems to be holding up fine.
