I was given two briar pipe blanks by a pipe carving friend of mine. These blanks have been aged for 40 years. I made a "test" pen last night and here is the result. I don't know if briar is so dense that CA wont stick or if it was the humidity (you could almost swim through the air last night), but I couldn't get a CA or a BLO/CA finish to sick at all last night. I wound up sanding the bare wood to 12K MM and then putting Renaissance wax on it (kinda how you would finish a 'natural' pipe).
