It was like shaving a ferret.

It the end somebody's going to get hurt.

It's sitting on two of my older pens.

Very nice pen. And i feel your pain. I tried to turn it end grain. It ripped out so many times, that i had to order a new barrel.

Gritty stuff isn't it.... you did it justice though... good looking pen.

I tried a block of the stuff in a pepper mill once years back..... my last time to turn it also... I thought it made an ugly pepper mills, but it sold the first thing at my next show.

Looks good. I've learned to stop turning way before even getting close to the bushings and then sand the rest of the way. No tear out when its most critical.
And like you, I won't mess with it anymore. Unless someone pays me again.

I feel your pain, but at least you finished it. My foray into Black Palm lasted less than a minute, the first blank hit the floor within seconds, just a touch with the gouge. Then I figured skew practice on the second blank. I did get it round before it leaped from the blank to join it's brother on the floor

Was it stabilized? That's the ticket with palm.

No it was an impulse purchase at Rockler.

What may have saved me is I trimmed it down quite a bit on the table saw before I started.

Also saw a video from Exotic Blanks that said skew only and only work downhill.

Get a sticky gold star and stick it on the headstock of your lathe. I have no experience with ferrets, but have had to shave hair from a cat. Welders gloves help, but do not prevent damage.

Next try -- do not pass up a red palm opportunity. Stabilization does help but not eliminate challenges.

The higher challenge is to find a chunk and make bowls or boxes out of palm --
