Experimenting with making my own pen blanks literally from old mesquite fire wood from backyard pile.

The photo is from my second attempt - using a European style pen kit. The pen is resting on a section of the sacrificial log from my experiment.

Looks good - the firewood pile is a good place to search for some interesting wood.

Cannot tell from the photo if the wood is honey mesquite or velvet mesquite. Both turn nicely.

Good looking pen.

( where in southern AZ are you at? I snow bird in Tucson).

i'm not sure what type of mesquite it is. this log could have been in pile for 10 years - i was very surprised at how nice the core was when the outer pieces cut away. i am definitely going to experiment with more.

i'm located 90miles south of Tucson, in Sierra Vista... home of Ft. Huachuca army post...and 10 miles from Tombstone.

My wife laughs when I get a fire started and 1/3 of the logs get carried out of the room and hidden foe "safe keeping."

Very nice pen!
