Last weekend I turned a Black Titanium Woody Pear cigar pen. The wood is from Australia and is fairly rare. It is a dark version of sheoak with pronounced rays. I found it difficult to turn as the wood is "loose" with large pores and a fairly weak structure. I felt the need to stabilize with thin CA. Indeed in a couple of places it was essential to prevent chipout.
I expected a bit more from this blank but some friends who saw the pen liked it. One of the problems is that the rays which are quite pronounced on the square blank tend to disappear on the pen. Oil won't "pop" them, CA didn't pop them. I tried finally several layers of lacquer followed by Deft with a double buff and Ren wax. Here it is:

Oh... I forgot that I also used Minwax sanding sealer after the 120 grit and before the 240 grit.
