Thanks. Ken, I did get a bleed of the blackwood and foolishly tried DNA and it looked terrible. Luckily there was enough material that I was able to turn it out with a sharp skew. It was real smooth so I left it alone then and finished with 6-7 CA/BLO coats. The BLO yellowed the maple just a bit.
Ryan, white balance is off just a bit, but the satin seems about right. The maple was fairly yellow after the first hit of BLO. I tried a different style later with holly and it was much whiter. Need to work on my photos to try and get better color reproduction.
Derrick thanks for the idea. I was working up something with holly and a red wood, but didn't think about the black and red as I thought there wouldn't be enough contrast. What the heck, it's only a pen blank or two if it doesn't work out.
