I turned this a while back but could not get a clear picture of it.Even this doesn't do it justice.
The chatoyance goes in the opposite direction of the grain but it doesn't show in all the pictures I have taken and I have taken a lot of this pen.
The section by the nib has purple in it

OOPS! sorry
That plain old walnut(actually that piece came from a"junk" piece of walnut 2x6 given to me).
I have a friend that used to be able to get the skids from a steel mill.
They used walnut.
For dimension lumber it didn't make the grade.
I was ripping lams when I got to this section and put it aside.
Most was a dark cocoa brown with no figure.
This little section was intriguing.

Good old walnut is still hard to beat in lots of cases. My brother from Michigan is coming in tomorrow night and is supposed to be bringing me a batch of walnut. While he's here I plan to make him a cigar out of his walnut. I hope it comes out as good as Eagle's did.

Somebody here has something nice to say about walnut? [:0][:)
I literaly tried giving some away on this forum and had not one inquiry. Walnut is probably my all time favorite wood. I once heard a master woodworker say that if it is worth making it is worth making out of walnut. Hard to dispute that.

The designer of Howard Hughes' "Spruce Goose" might have something to say about that.
If it is heart wood(rich brown) I love it.
Out to the sapwood I can take it or leave it(usually leave it)
Crotch, figured or feathered it can't be beat.
