I have turned pens of several different materials and wanted to try something new so I decided to try aluminum[:p]. I learned a lot from this experience, one thing to remember is to start with a rod as close to the finished size as possible(I hear you laughing now):D. I started with 7/8" rod but needed only about 5/8". I also got a lot of practice sharpening tools, they're about an inch shorter now:(.
The top one is a platinum cigar and the bottom is a chrome baron, both are coated with automotive lacquer.
