Got 4 of these pine cones from Les (rd_ab_penman) a while back. In making this pen I managed to destroy the first 3. This is the 4th and last attempt.

I did not want to tempt my fate any further to get a better fit of the nib end. The fit is a bit proud there.

I used a slightly modified method to prepare the blank from Les'.

Preparing the blank:

  • I drilled a 27/64" hole for a Elegant Beauty through the cone,
  • marinated the cone in Minwax Wood Hardner for 24 hours,
  • dried it in a warming chamber for about 3 hours,
  • cleaned/filed the hole a bit so that the tube would fit,
  • CA glued the tube,
  • trimmed blank roughly 90 deg to 4 sides using the bandsaw,
  • rounded off the blank as much as I could on a disc sander,
  • repeated the following 2 steps until to best fit:
  • turned/shaved the blank very lightly about 5 to 6 passes
  • repeated the applying CA and turning steps (many, many times)

Sanding and finishing:

  • sanded down 600 grit,
  • applied 6 coats of medium CA with buffing with fine steel wool in between,
  • applied 2 coats of thin CA buffing with back of a leftover sand paper,
  • no HUT polishing this time.

Thank you Les.

And thank you for looking. Comments are welcome.

Branden you have more patience than I.
Doing that on an Elegant Beauty would have sent parts
flying around my shop. On a sierra, sure. Better yet, a
Sierra Vista or Wall St III. Looks great.
