My first attempt was to cut an octagon but I only have a band saw and so could not get an accurate shape, a table saw would probebly have given a better result. I then turned a cylinder and using my indexing ring marked the 8 segments. This method was better but the position of the blank for cutting was less than perfect. So the next attempt I turned the cylinder and marked the segments and then drilled small holes to take a pin which gave me a positive locator for each cut and resulted in the above pen. I will photograph the process the next time and post the pics.
