The coworker who commissioned the Celtic pen for himself also commissioned me to make a 50 caliber pen for a friend. I'm not too sure what the wood is, it's a scrap we found around our shop that he liked. It was kind of coarse to turn (large pores), a light brown with almost black flecks going through it. Chestnut Oak, maybe?

The kit is pretty neat, and it's not nearly as heavy as the Celtic, but the balance feels off because the weight of the shell, too much weight near the primer end.

Nice job. It certainly looks like some kind of oak but I wouldn't have a clue as to what kind.

I've made a few of those pens too - they're fun to make & a great conversation piece.

Great job! Perfect finish.

If you ever try selling at a fair or something, be sure to make alot of these. They sell like crazy! At one fair I sold over 40 between the 30 cal and 50 cal at $30 each. You do the math
