308 and homemade box

here is a 308 dear antler I made for a co-worker and one of my homemade boxes

Very Cool! How do you cut the grooves in the box, with a router bit? Do you size the boxes to a individual pen so they don't rattle around? I wonder if you could drill a hole and anchor an elastic or something on either side of the bottom groove to hold the pen down.
